What is the value of Asia's most expensive stamp?

The Japanese stamp in greyish yellow-green and with a face value of 500 mon was issued in 1871. In this case it is an example with an inverted centre, the so-called earliest printing, printing plate 1, position 8 from the top right corner of the sheet. The stamp bears a light impression of the "Kakegawa Kensazumi" cancellation.

1871, 500 Mon, inverted centre

This stamp is a completely unique example of the only inverted centre of the entire classical Japan, it is unquestionably the most important and valuable stamp of Japan and all of Asia, and is also one of the ten most important rarities of world philately. Unlike other world rarities, this stamp is free of defects and is in very nice condition.

The stamp was discovered sometime between 1953 and 1973 by the American collector John C. Linsley, who found it in a Japanese collection. The error became public when his stepson submitted the stamp for authentication in 1973.

Currently, the stamp is accompanied by a certificate from The Philatelic Federation of Japan Expert Committee (2011), signed by Dr. Sawa, as well as a certificate issued by Florian Eichhorn BPP (2023).

The stamp was sold at the David Feldman auction in Switzerland in June this year for €4,400,000 excluding auction fees, so its final value was well over €5 million. The starting price was €4,000,000.

Many other Japanese rarities were sold at the above-mentioned auction. More about them will be in a comprehensive article to be published in the Merkur Revue magazine - if you are interested, I recommend a subscription, it costs only a few hundred Czech crowns a year! However, the magazine is in Czech language. Those interested can write to redakce@merkur-revue.eu.
