As it happens, when political situation changed in the past, many countries overprinted the stamps of the time with overprints to draw attention to the change. These overprints are then highly sought after by stamp collectors, as they were often issued in only minimal numbers, sometimes only in a few pieces. This situation was, of course, exploited and is still exploited by many conmen who still print either forgeries of the overprints of the time or invent their own overprints that never existed. And collectors pay absurd amounts for them, thinking they are buying something very special and rare.
Yet the solution to prevent philatelists from buying these nonsense overprints is so simple - the key to identifying genuine overprints is a book compiled by the Spaniard Juan Santaeugenia. I managed to get hold of a few copies of this book for the price of 220 EUR/piece plus postage. In my opinion, a very reasonable price, as this book sells on the market for much more (if it appears anywhere at all). I have seen it for over 300 EUR already!
If you are interested in this book, let me know - you can find the contact details in the contacts section of this web. I have the last few copies.
